Nobody warned me about the business part.
After earning my master’s in clinical mental health counseling, I took a break from being a therapist. Then I went back for my MSW — with absolutely zero intention of ever owning a practice. So that’s already funny.
I built my practice on the side while I was burned out at a W-2 job, working evenings at a doctor’s office and carrying a mortgage on a single income. When I transitioned into full-time private practice, I had no idea what to pay myself. No idea what to set aside for taxes. Every cancellation sent me spiraling, and my only real strategy was to take on more clients.
And I have ADHD. So the spreadsheets, the apps, the generic advice about being more disciplined with money — none of it stuck. Not because I wasn’t trying. Because none of it was built for the way my brain actually works, or for a business where income arrives in forty-five-minute pieces.
Profit for Keeps® was the first system that fit. I went through it as a client, built my system, and it held. It changed how my whole practice runs. Then I became the first licensed therapist to complete the certification, because I wanted to bring it back to the people I came from.
I’m not teaching you something I read about. I’m teaching you what I run on.
